The Vice Chancellor of Universitiy of Cross River (UNICROSS) Prof. Augustine Angba has appealed to the Council of Chiefs of Efut Kingdom to wade into the issue of land encroachment in the institution.
Prof. Angba made the appeal today, Tuesday March 2nd 2021, when he led management staff of the university on a courtesy visit to the Muri Munene in Council at his palace in Calabar.
According to the Vice Chancellor, “people have built on the good parts of our land and left the swamp for us. We are appealing passionately that if there is anything this council can do to stop the issue of encroachment, please help us.”
Reacting, the Muri Munene of Efut and Paramount Ruler of Calabar South , HRM Professor Itam Hogan assured the VC that the council will look into the issue and address it. He said: “I promise that before the end of this month, we will reclaim all the lands working in conjunction with the ministry of Lands. Get your survey plan while coming for our next meeting. We are not going to sacrifice UNICROSS for anybody because the university is bigger than everybody and I am part of the university.”
The VC assured the council that Management will not disappoint them and anytime there are challenges, they will come to them for help.
He notified the council of the name change, saying: “We want to inform you that our name has changed from CRUTECH to UNICROSS. This means we are no longer restricted to only technological courses as we are now a conventional university. We thank His Excellency that he yielded to this course and assented to the bill.”
On the issue of security, he said “We have done so much to reduce the security infractions on campus. We are soliciting for the support of the youths in the fight against crime. We want you to gather the list of your children who scored high in JAMB so they can be given admission. When it is time for employment, we will inform the council. We are presently ensuring that none of our best graduates remains on the street.”
The Muri Munene appreciated the VC and Management Staff for their visit, saying: “I am very happy that you have been made substantive VC because you’re someone who understand us. We thank God that you have come to improve UNICROSS. When it comes to the time to recruit security, involve the community boys. Rearrange your security architecture.”
Members of Management Staff who accompanied the VC include the two DVC Academics, Prof. Mrs Joy Etiowo, DVC Admin, Prof. Mrs Mary Eyo, Registrar, Mr. Victor Ene, Bursar, Universitiy Librarian, Prof. Nkanu and the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onen
