The entire Watt market and most business areas in Calabar metropolis is on total lockdown as Igbo Traders union are protesting against incessant kidnapping of their members and rise in insecurity around the metropolis. The traders are staging a two day stay-at-home protest as a way of calling the attention of the state government to the reoccurring kidnap of their members.
A tour around major markets like Watt, Marian market amongst others shows that most shops owned by Igbo traders are on total lockdown as the traders refused to open or attend to customers.
One of the inscription found on a shop and signed by the traders reads ‘Calabar has become a safe haven for kidnapping and armed robbery as our people are kidnapped on daily basis. So we are calling on the state government to come to our aid”.
However, the state government has threatened to arrest and prosecute anyone who obstructs those who intend to open their shops and called on the Igbo Traders Union to support the fight against cultism, kidnapping and other crimes across the metropolis.
