CALABAR- THE Muri Munene of Efuts and Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, Professor Hogan Itam has alleged that those fighting to dethrone him are arrow heads behind the incessant kidnappings and armed robbery in Calabar South.
Itam who spoke with Vanguard at the weekend stated that he was unanimously elected by kingmakers as the king of Efuts following the departure of Muri Munene, Ebuka Ebuka on a ‘long journey” but has been having protracted battles by some persons in his kingdom who want to usurp the throne.
‘In our tradition the Muri stool rotates round the eight clans which make up Efuts kingdom and when it was the turn of Efut Ukem to occupy the throne, I was elected by all the kingmakers except one who was indisposed at the time but since then I have been facing opposition from some people who want the throne by force”.
He said on Friday last meet week he convened a meeting of all the chiefs and elders of Efut at Anantigha the council headquartres but during the meeting some thugs sponsored by those fighting him came to attack him and others in the meeting and consequently disrupted the meeting.
“I convened the meeting to see what we as traditional rulers in Calabar South can contribute towards reducing the violence in the area because government was worried but from nowhere over twenty five thugs armed with different weapons attacked us and aborted the meeting”.
He said the action of his opponents by disrupting the meeting which was meant to find solution to acts of criminality in the area clearly shows that they are the sponsors of the violence and criminal activities there.
Professor Itam claimed that those opposing him have since been suspended from the Obong of Calabar Council and also from Efut Combined Assembly following their criminal activities but they regrouped to foment crisis in the kingdom.
He said the action of those people is an affront to the people who elected him and the government which gave him the sceptre of office.
” His Excellency Senator Ben Ayade gave me the staff of office on the 18th of September 2018 and anyone who says he does not recognise government action is fighting government ”
