The University of Calabar in collaboration with a security firm, Swipes of Africa, has completed a 5 days intensive training workshop for it’s security personnel for effective surveillance and timely response of emergency calls on campus.
Speaking at the end of the training, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi, said she was encouraged with the conduct of the security personnel during the training.
According to her, from the observation of the Course Director, the security personnel were not bad as been rumoured.
“I have been very worried that Unical security personnel were not good enough, but after listening to a security expert, I am more convinced that we have good security men and women on campus.
“I am particularly pleased that from the report I got, the security personnel did well during the training, physical exercise and medical checks. I want to commend and congratulate you all.
“I totally accept that there are challenges confronting our security personnel which have resulted to the shortcomings that we have noticed on campus.
“I also accept that given a much better environment, our security personnel will do well,” she said.
She told the security personnel that 30 additional walkie talkies were already on ground and would be handed over to the Chief Security Officer for distribution to them.
She encouraged them to do their work with utmost passion and responsibility, adding that passion “is the driving force behind success”.
She noted that as the resources of the institution improves, the management will mak provision for mobility for the security personnel in order to help them be on alert and respond to calls on a short notice.
Prof. Obi explained that the management of the institution was still looking up on talking to alumni members to see how they can come in and support the university.
The VC, who re-emphasized the importance of training and retraining for overall development, said it helps to sharpen one’s skills with new innovations.
She commended Mr Dodeye Arikpo for his excellent training sessions and for partnering with the university to realise the objective of effective security surveillance on campus.
Speaking earlier, Arikpo noted that the training was intensive and interesting, adding that the feedback from the security personnel were encouraging.
Arikpo, a former Chief Security Officer to former Gov. Liyel Imoke, expressed confidence that the training have further equipped the security personnel with modern ideas on how to do their job creditably.
“In the last 5 days, we have had very fruitful sessions and the feedback we have gotten from the security personnel have been very encouraging.
“We came here with a mindset that Unical security personnel were actually very bad; but we are surprised that they are not the image they are often painted to be,” he said.
High point of the programme was the presentation of certificates to the security personnel by the VC.
