There was tension at the
Edgerly Road, Calabar South on Wednesday as many hoodlums engage in a violent combat and destruction of properties unabated.
Our Correspondent who was at the scene of the incidence gathered that the impasse was as result of disagreement between men of the Department of Public Transport (DoPT) and tricycle riders.
It was gathered that the residents and the shop owners in the area had to scamper for safety as the hoodlums were fighting each other, using dangerous weapons.
The fighters numbered over 17 were in possession of guns, machete, axes and other dangerous weapons .
The thugs who stormed the area at precisely 3:40 pm, brandished dangerous weapons which they used to beat and injure one of our correspondent.
The hoodlums also attacked, and looted some people attempting to catch a glimpse of the ongoing fight.
Combined security operatives including the Navy, Army and civil defense were later mobilised to the scene to restore normalcy.
Some of the affected shop owners who preferred anonymity disclosed to our Correspondent that the fight started as a result of a certain unidentified Department of Public Transport (DOPT ) member who tried to arrest a tricycle rider who then called his gang for re-enforcement
According to him “I was in my shop trying to attend to a customer, suddenly a certain DOPT guy ran into my studio, as a result of trying to ask what happened , the other guy pointed a gun, others then came inside and collected my money 3,000 naira the only job I did for the day.
He added that “This DOPT guy had tried to hold one Keke guy na so the guy no gree small time cult guys come o “.
As at the time of filling this report, calm has returned as security men are seen stationed there to forestall further destruction.
