The new Dean Faculty of Law University of Calabar, Professor Cyril Ndifon, has lauded the wonderful achievements of his predecessor, Prof Michael P. Okom even as he pledged to consolidate on them and the harmony experienced during his tenure as Dean.
Disclosing this during a hand over ceremony at the Faculty Board Room on Friday, Ndifon also lauded the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi for appointing someone with pedigree from the Faculty as Deputy Vice Chancellor and also deeming it feat to allow a credible election in spite of the powers conferred on her to appoint anyone she considers capable to man the affairs of the law faculty.
“I have listened to your handover notes with wonderful achievements; I want to pledge that your ten points request would be taken into consideration in the best possible way.
“We thank God that we have one of our own as DVC of the University and this would not have been possible if it were not for the Vice Chancellor we have today. Thanks to her for deeming it feat that instead of making an appointment in the midst of Professors, there should be an election which has given it credibility”
With a charge to the academic staff to be punctual and dedicated to teaching, the new dean said, “ our focus here is to have a faculty of law that is focused on bringing everybody together as one big family” and to encourage academic staff to work hard so that they can be promoted.
While reeling out his verifiable achievements, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration and outgoing Dean of the faculty, Professor Michael P. Okom averred that upon assumption of office in July 2018, his mission statement was, “To Internationalise the Faculty in line with Global Best Practices and make students to be able compete favourably in the 21st Century Digital Turf”
He said under his watch, students of the faculty won laurels like; 20th Manfred Sachs International Space Law Competition in Africa held in Pretoria South Africa and subsequently emerged Runners Up in the Finals held in the United States of America in 2019.
Winning the National Law Students’ Association (LAWSON) organised South South Debate Championship in 2020 and the National Debate tournament at the Obafemi Awolowo University in 2019.
Professor Okom said he was able to reverse the faculty’s bad image occasioned by the damning report of the University Quality Assurance Committee report by ensuring that lecturers were successfully motivated through a “ comaraderie leadership method” that yielded results.
While praying God to grant the new Dean the grace and wisdom to preserve his legacy, he said under his stewardship, he organised a successful law dinner, procured over 20 solar panels for the faculty at the university library, faculty building and as well influenced the purchase of a Sienna vehicle by harnessing the Alumni to support the faculty.
