Hon. Elvert Ayambem, the lawmaker representing Ikom II State Constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly, has condemned the killing of some youths over the communal clash between Nlul and Abankang communities in Ikom.
Ayambem, who urged the warring communities to embrace peace and unity, expressed sadness that the clash was coming at a time were the New Year celebration was still fresh in the minds of people.
He lamented over the destruction of houses in Abankang community, adding that the situation will rather increase poverty in the area at a point where people were looking for ways to develop their properties.
“The crisis which started four days has claimed the lives of some persons in Abankang community while several houses were also destroyed in the process.
“I want to appeal to youths from various communities to drop their weapons and embrace peace. Violence can never attract development to any area that is hostile, we need peace in our communities.
“The year is too fresh; at this point, we should be looking at ways of recovering our losses of 2019 that was ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
He said that the incident has been reported to the police for urgent intervention with a view to bring the hostility to a calm.
The lawmaker appealed to the Nigerian Army in Calabar to also deploy soldiers to the area in order to calm the communities and also prevent a further attack.
“Currently, I am working with the traditional leaders in Bakor so that they can call their subjects to order for peace to reign.
“Whosoever is suspected to be the perpetrators of this act will be summoned and dealt with according to the law despite his/her political, cultural or religious position,” he maintained.
