An Efik Socio-cultural group under the aegies of Nka Ikemesit Mkparawa Essien Efik Duob-Eba has issued a seven days quit notice to any one parading him as ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ in Calabar. The notice is billed to take effect from April 3rd, 2021.
The notice which is signed by Ekpo Ekeng, the Chairman of the group came as a result of what the group term ‘Insult on the Obong of Calabar’ as according to them “For insulting the Obong of Calabar’, calling yourself or making yourself the Obong of Calabar’ when the Obong is still on the throne. For that reason, you are given seven days to pack and leave Calabar”.
The group further requested that those parading himself as ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ should as a matter of urgency apologize to the Obong of Calabar or face severe consequence.
According to them “You have to, under that seven days, go to His Eminence, the Obong of Calabar at his palace and apologize or pack out of Calabar.”
They added that “We cannot tolerate or have two Kings in one Kingdom. Nobody can do it in your place and your people accept it. So you cannot do it here”.
Investigation reveals that when the owner of INNOSON motors visited Calabar recently to receive award in UNICAL, some group of people who parade themselves as the ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ told him that there is no need to pay a visit to the Obong of Calabar as they are the highest title holders in Calabar. This is what angered the Efik group to issue the statement.
However in a swift reaction, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Non Indigine Affairs (Igbo) and President of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo in Cross River State, Barr. Ugoji Nwabueze says he has withdrawn the certificate of ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ in Cross River as directed by the South East Traditional Rulers Council and warned of the frosty relationship the continuous use of the title brought between the Igbo and the Efiks and other communities in the state.
